Fun Animal Teeth Facts From Your Emergency Dentist in Kenner

This year is flying by really fast! It’s already March and April is coming up pretty soon. Speaking of which, did you know that April is National Pet Month? That got us thinking—if you take a look at animal teeth, how different are they? What animal has the most teeth? Which has none? There are so many animals, there have to be even more teeth to discuss. At Exceptional Dental, we’re more than your average emergency dentist in Kenner. While we don’t actually treat animal teeth, we always love learning interesting things!

Our Favorite Animal Dental Facts

While we cannot mention every animal—and their teeth—in one blog post, we did want to mention some of the most interesting. Take a look! You’ll probably be as surprised as we were.

  • As residents of Louisiana, we’re familiar with our alligators. But how well do you actually know them? Did you know these big reptilians have hollow teeth? And often, the bigger ones have another inside, waiting for the outer to break. That way, the gator isn’t struggling to hold onto their food. Way to go evolution!
  • Speaking of hollow teeth, did you know most snake fangs are hollow? These teeth act almost like needles. Depending on the type of snake, however, these fangs can be hollow, closed, curved, or not there at all. Every species is a little different.
  • Some animals do just fine without teeth. From the smallest salamander to even the huge blue whale. As far as whales go, they have bristle-like fibers instead of teeth. These bristles comb through the water for their food source: tiny krill.
  • Sharks are known for their numerous teeth. They have rows and rows that are constantly regrowing for their entire lives. However, despite their prolific grin, they are not the creature with the most teeth at one time. The answer will probably surprise you! On average, garden snails have around 14,000 teeth in their tiny mouths. That’s enough teeth for more than four hundred humans!

There are so many more animals out there—each with their own dental story! Tell us about your favorite animal’s teeth next time you come into the office. As your choice emergency dentist in Kenner, we’re happy to serve you—and learn from you!

Emergency Dentistry From A Slidell Emergency Dentist

Recognizing what a dental emergency means can be the difference between saving your tooth and complete tooth loss. The professionals at Exceptional Dental can help you better understand what a true dental emergency is. All patients deserve to be able to make an informed decision on whether or not they’re experiencing an emergency or not. So how can a Slidell emergency dentist help you?

Dental emergencies are a lot more common than you think. In fact, one in six Americans experiences a dental emergency each year. Almost three-fourths of the general public has a form of dental implants such as caps, crowns, or fillings. Out of all dental related emergencies, a quarter of them relate back to a previous filling or restoration. Sadly, only two-thirds of people that have experienced a dental emergency reported using emergency dental services. Perhaps this is because of the ambiguity as to what necessitates an emergency dental visit. Let’s clear this right up! It wouldn’t do you any good if you sit on your dental injuries.

So What Is A Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any dental situation that requires immediate attention in order to minimize the risk of serious medical complications. This can be anything ranging from cracked or broken teeth to severe toothaches. In general, any dental problem that needs immediate treatment to stop bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or to save a tooth is considered an emergency. The number one priority for our Slidell emergency dentists is to make sure you have adequate care in a timely manner.

What Do I Do?

In case of a dental emergency, first and foremost don’t panic. If you or a family member is in the midst of a dental emergency, contact an emergency dentist’s office immediately and explain the situation to the best of your abilities. If you’re still looking for clarification on what a true dental emergency is, perhaps ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you in severe pain? Emergency dental clinics’ number one priority is to stop your immediate pain.
  • Have you lost a tooth? Adults should almost never lose a tooth, if you are missing a tooth it’s imperative that you get to an emergency clinic right away for the greatest chance of saving your tooth.
  • Do you have loose teeth? A loose tooth is a serious problem, adult teeth are permanent. A loose tooth is a dental emergency.
  • Do you have an infection? An abscess or serious infection in your mouth can be potentially life-threatening, and treatment should not wait.
  • Are you bleeding from the mouth? This is a potential sign of an emergency. Call us immediately!

Accidents happen in the blink of an eye and often without warning. For example, you can crack a tooth by biting down on something you shouldn’t have. Or perhaps an abscess forms after a bad infection. Either way, it won’t do you any good to sit on your hands and hope it gets better. You need to see a professional now! Find out what emergency dental services do for you in more ways than you’d think.

What Happens If I Avoid Taking Care Of My Teeth?

Recent research speculates that oral health is directly linked to our overall health. Ignoring dental issues, no matter how serious, could lead to illness in the rest of the body. Like many places on the body, the mouth is full of bacteria. So serious issues, like abscesses, should be handled as soon as possible to avoid further problems.

Also, there are a handful of serious diseases that researchers believe might come from bad oral health. Some of these include:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Pregnancy Complications
  • Pneumonia
  • Dementia

Serious issues can also lead to infection, affecting the other teeth in your mouth. When there’s an emergency, do yourself a favor and find the closest Exceptional Dental! A professional will take care of the problem before you know it, stopping this domino effect of problems.

You’re In Good Hands With These Emergency Dental Services

Don’t sit around and do nothing when your teeth are in need of emergency dental services. Get help from the professional dentists at Exceptional Dental. If you had an accident, don’t hesitate to make an appointment.

Emergency Care Tips From A Louisiana Dentist

Emergencies happen from time to time. But that doesn’t mean you should live with it! At Exceptional Dental, our patients’ comfort is one of our top priorities. If you’re in need of Emergency Care, we can get you an appointment within the next 24 hours. You deserve to have a Louisiana dentist who knows what they’re doing. Call today and relieve yourself of pain.

Tips And Tricks

Emergencies can take on any shape or form. So we understand that it can be difficult to see a dentist immediately. Here’s what to do in case an emergency does happen:

  • Toothaches. Rinse your mouth with warm water and go over the tooth with dental floss in case of an obstruction. Apply a cold compress if swelling occurs.
  • Chipped or broken teeth. Save any pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress if there’s swelling and gauze if you’re bleeding.
  • Knocked-out teeth. Rinse the tooth of any dirt, but do not remove any tissue attached. If you can, try to place the tooth back in the socket, but do not force it. If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in milk with a pinch of salt. See a dentist as quickly as possible as teeth have a less likely chance to stay in place as time goes on.
  • Partially dislodged teeth. Use a cold compress or a pain reliever until you see your dentist.
  • Lost filling. Using a piece of sugarless gum to fill the space until you see a dentist is the best quick fix. Using gum with sugar will cause pain, so be careful!
  • Lost crown. Bring the crown with you to our dentist appointment. If possible, try to slip it back over the tooth with dental cement or toothpaste.
  • Broken brace wires. Wire poking you in the mouth? Try using a pencil eraser to push the wire into a more comfortable position. If you cannot, place orthodontic wax or gauze over it. NEVER cut the wire.
  • Loose brackets and bands. Temporarily reattach loose braces with orthodontic wax. For bands, save it and call your orthodontist as soon as possible.
  • Abscess. To ease any pain, try rinsing your mouth with a mild salt water solution. See a dentist ASAP to prevent serious damage.
  • Soft-tissue injuries. Rinsing, using gauze, and applying a compress does wonders for temporary relief.

No matter the injury, it’s best to see a Louisiana dentist as soon as possible. Above all, using these tricks are best for temporary care. However, a dentist is sure to stop your pain for good.
