How Restorative Dental Services In Marrero Can Improve Your Life

“Restorative dentistry” is a common term used in the dental field. It can refer to a variety of dental work. But commonly, it refers to procedures that try to restore both form and function of the mouth. Restorative dentistry is for patients with both functional and cosmetic related issues and works to restore their quality of life. Restorative dentistry includes fillings, veneers, crowns, bridges, full and partial dentures, and dental implants.

Let’s Talk About The Types Of Dental Restorations

You have many choices available for repairing worn, decayed, or damaged teeth. This category of dental services can help restore your healthy and beautiful smile back to its former glory. After all, the purpose of restorative dentistry is to help you restore some form or function to your oral system. This could range from filling cavities to full-on tooth replacements. Depending on your oral profile, your dentist might perform one of two types of dental restorations.

Direct

Direct tooth restorations involve placing fillings into a cavity. Luckily, direct tooth restorations only take a single visit to your local dentist’s office. Based on the type and location of your cavity. Because your molars as they experience the brunt of all chewing, your dentist might use a metal alloy for fillings. Glass or resin fillings are often used for fillings near the tooth’s root. That’s because these areas aren’t subjected to much pressure from chewing. If you have any questions about your filling material, be sure to ask your dentist.

Indirect

Indirect tooth restorations involve customized tooth replacements. These take the form of crowns, overlays, or inlays. A crown often covers the chewing surface of a tooth. Doing this gives back chewing power if the tooth was previously damaged. To continue, inlay restorations cover one or more parts of your teeth. This also gives you power back in your bite. The materials used in these procedures help protect your teeth from further damage. They also give you a considerable amount of comfort when it comes to chewing and eating.

Repair Damaged / Missing / Decayed Teeth

Restorative dentistry is often also referred to as prosthodontics. However you phrase it, prosthodontics’ goal is to preserve natural teeth as much as possible. This goal is attained through dental services like implants, bridges, or dentures. Veneers also fall into this category but are mainly cosmetic in nature. Replacing missing teeth within the oral structure takes stress off of others and gives functionality back to your bite.

How To Have A Halloween That’d Make Your Marrero Dentist Smile

It’s that time of year again! When the ghouls and goblins roam freely, there’s a costume store on every corner, and the sweet smell of candy is in the air. No matter where you look, there are decadently wrapped morsels of devilishly tempting candy. Oh boy, you guessed it—t’s time for Halloween! From Exceptional Dental, our dentists in Marrero have come up with a sure-fire guide to help keep your teeth safe from the haunted horrors of some Halloween candy.

Sort Your Candy

Whether you’re raiding your child’s candy basket—or maybe you’re happy with your own Halloween haul—our first step is to sort all the pieces of candy you’ve made away with. Sort it into two piles, the first is going to include all your sweet and gooey goods. Keep an eye out for candies such as taffy, caramels, gummy worms, and other sweets of that sort. Stack up all your sours and gummies in one pile and move the rest of your candy to the other pile.

Stay Away From The Three S’s

You heard that right, stay away from pile number one. One of the major causes of cavities and tooth decay is our relationship to sticky, sugary, and sour foods and beverages.

  • There is a proven cause-and-effect relationship with sticky substances and poor dental health. Studies show that bacteria can still grow in your mouth if you think you brushed and flossed well. Tiny bits of food can get stuck in hard-to-reach areas and cause a build-up of bacteria.
  • Oral bacteria thrive in sugar-rich environments—even if it’s just a little bit of candy you forgot didn’t manage to brush out. The by-product of the interaction of sugar and bacteria causes a buildup of acid, which can lead to cavities and tooth decay.
  •  Sour candies have a large amount of both acid and sugar which is a double whammy when it comes to dental health. These candies typically get caught in between your teeth and gums and cause accelerated tooth decay due to their acidic properties.

More Tooth-Healthy Strategies

While being picky about what kind of candy we eat is a good way to reduce the risk of tooth decay, an even better approach is to simply limit how much candy you consume. This means staying away from poor habits like grazing or over-indulging. Drinking more water also helps to rinse out excess sugar from your between your teeth and from your mouth.

It’s important to wait at least 30 minutes to brush your teeth after you eat candy due to the varying acidity levels in candy. That’s because it takes your saliva about 30 minutes to restore your natural oral pH levels. Therefore, brushing your teeth right away can actually hurt your teeth more than helping! Combining all these strategies can make for a Halloween that’ll keep your dentist smiling.

Get Your Gums Checked Out At Our Marrero Dentist Offices

Everyone’s heard of the term “Gum Disease” but do you know what it really is? Gum Disease is a blanket term for the cycle of periodontal disease. It all starts off simply enough, plaque builds up and lets bacteria build up in your mouth, your gums start to get sensitive and start to bleed. If you make it to that step and you let it go untreated the problem can get much much worse to the point your teeth are falling out. It’s best to take preventative measures by going to your local dentist at least twice a year to get checked for pre-periodontal disease (pre-gum disease). So what really is periodontal disease?

A Few Signs Of Gum Disease To Look Out For

Not everyone knows exactly what “periodontal disease” is. Or, at least, you think you don’t. In short, periodontal disease attacks the gums and bone that support the teeth but you better know this as “gum disease.” Tartar builds up around the tooth and calcifies in less than three days. This tartar buildup creates pockets of inflammation and allows for bacterial buildup. When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Did you know four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t even know it? Scary, right? Because the early stages of Periodontal Disease are often painless, it’s hard to discern when the disease has taken hold. Even if you have gum disease, you can find help with the dental care at one of our Marrero Dentist Offices.

Bleeding Gums

Do you notice pink in the sink after brushing or that your gums are bleeding when you floss your teeth? Bleeding gums is one of the very first signs of pre-periodontal disease.  Although a little blood in the sink may be something easy to shrug off, this is an excellent time to contact your dentist for an examination. Catching gum disease early gives you the best chance of being able to reverse your condition.

Chronic Bad Breath

What about bad breath that won’t go away no matter what you do? This may be a sign of a deeper problem related to your dental health. Chronic bad breath is another symptom related to pre-periodontal disease and is caused by bacteria in the mouth forming up build up tartar and plaque. Fortunately, this symptom is easily reversible with a quick visit to your dentist.

Infected Gums & Tooth Loss

A buildup of bacteria under the soft tissues in your mouth can also cause gum disease. These red, swollen gums are common when you have pre-periodontal disease. Periodontal Disease can lead to teeth feeling loose in your mouth, bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers (fibers that support the tooth to the bone).

Not only is periodontal disease the number one reason for tooth loss, but research also suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. Don’t wait for your gum disease to become a problem, call the professionals today!
