BOTOX® – AT THE DENTIST?
It’s no secret that BOTOX® injections help smooth out those troublesome lines and wrinkles that appear as we age. Since introduced in 2002, more than 11.5 million BOTOX® Cosmetic procedures have been performed on everything from fine lines around the mouth and eyes to the moderate-to-severe frown lines that develop between the brows.
What may have come as a surprise is that BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are available at Exceptional Dental of Kenner. But realistically, our dentists are more familiar with treating facial issues and perform more invasive procedures in the facial areas than ophthalmologists, general plastic surgeons, dermatologists, OB/GYNs, and other practitioners who administer Botox treatments.
Uniquely trained to diagnosis, prevent and treat diseases, disorders and conditions of the mouth, the jaw and face – from chin to forehead – and the impact they have on the whole body, our dedicated team has also undergone more specialized training to carry out complex procedures such as sedation, oral and cosmetic surgery, and dental implants.
So BOTOX® injections from Exceptional Dental makes sense after all.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medication injected into facial muscles to improve the look of moderate-to-severe crow’s feet lines at the corners of the eyes and frown lines between the brows.
Skin ages and wrinkles due to a number of factors, including cellular changes, collagen depletion, hormone loss, damage caused by free radicals – and muscle contractions. When you squint, frown or crease your brow as you concentrate, the muscles contract and cause your skin to furrow and fold. After years of these contractions, the wrinkles linger even when your face is relaxed.
When BOTOX® is used to block the nerve impulses to the injected muscles, the muscle activity that caused the persistent lines to form is reduced. Skin begins to relax and smooth out.
Administered by our dentists as a simple, nonsurgical treatment, BOTOX® blocks nerve impulses to the injected muscles, reducing muscle activity and smoothing out lines and wrinkles. With real, noticeable results, no surgery and no recovery time – and results that last as long as four months – it’s no wonder why BOTOX® has been chosen by millions of patients between 18 to 65 years of age and the dentists at Exceptional Dental.
BOTOX® THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS
Patients suffering from painful conditions of the jaw and face, such as TMD, may find relief with BOTOX® therapy at Exceptional Dental.
While often referred to as TMJ – or temporomandibular joint – temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are problems with the jaw, jaw joint or surrounding muscles that can cause pain and swelling in your face, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when chewing, speaking or opening your mouth.
While the exact cause is not clear, most dentists believe that TMD originates in the jaw muscles when the joint is misaligned, or the jaw, face, head or neck is injured; as a result of joint disease, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis; due to chronic pressure on the joint or facial muscles, such as teeth grinding or clenching; and the effects of stress, which causes facial muscles to tense and the jaw or teeth to clench.
Injected directly into the jaw muscles – typically at half the dosage used for cosmetic treatments – BOTOX® blocks the nerve impulses to the injected muscles. Once these signals are interrupted, the contractions fade, the muscles relax – and the pain diminishes.
IS BOTOX® AVAILABLE FOR TREATING OTHER CONDITIONS?
BOTOX® is also a valuable asset for patients adjusting to new implants; when patients experience chronic teeth grinding or clenching; or when retraining a patient’s facial muscles in orthodontic cases. Some patients with high lip lines have also benefited from the use of BOTOX® in conjunction with lip augmentation as an alternative to extensive surgery.
